Marisa Avelar is a graphic designer, painter, and mixed media artist in Brooklyn, NY. She was born and raised in Houston, TX and spent 4 years in the Savannah, GA area where she received her B.F.A. in Art with an emphasis in graphic design and painting from Georgia Southern University. She is currently a Marketing Graphic Designer for Perkins Eastman, one of the largest architectural firms in the country that makes beautiful groundbreaking work and believes in sustainability and is human centered in their design focus. Check out their amazing initiatives like restoring and revonating the Tenement Museum, the TKTS booth in Times Square or their many architectural wonders in hotel and hospital design that are made to be sustainable and improve every day lives. She has a broad base of design experience including working for cultural institutions like the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Manhattan, the Museum of Fine Arts Houston and Aurora Picture Show. Jobs in the private sector include Live Nation, and civic organizations like NYC Votes and stints at design agencies and financial institutions. She loves the play of type and vintage advertising as well as the clean, precise work of the modernists, everything vintage, vibrant colors and anything that has personality. She also loves to stay actively involved in arts and design organizations like AIGA and the New York Foundation for the Arts.
